Amazon nuclear power facility
A nuclear power facility located in the South American Amazon forest blew its stack, irradiating the world's largest rainforest, an event that environmentalists called a disaster. Given the importance and significance of the rainforest to South America, this could be what led to the Amazon War, as it is safe to presume that the plant was owned or sponsored by a foreign power, such as the United States.
