"Zone Five" is the seventh episode of RoboCop: The Series.

Plot[]

At his new job at Ed's Water Store, Jimmy Murphy and his boss Ed Mallory are harassed and threatened by two men high on the designer drug Fun. Led by Albert Delorio, the Community Action Patrol (CAP Crew) soon intervenes, attacking the two men. RoboCop arrives and learns that the CAP Crew are endorsed by OCP and are soon to be assigned exclusive police duties Zone Five. The CAP Crew give Jimmy a ride home.

Sergeant Parks introduces to Metro South OCP Security Concepts Vice President Foster, who briefs the police officers on the CAP Crew and their post in Zone Five. The police respond negatively to this, especially Parks, who recognizes Delorio at the former chief of the Thrill Killers, a violent gang he faced when he worked in Chicago. Despite the outrage, Foster insists that the CAP Crew's exclusive duties in Zone Five will be more efficient for the police department.

RoboCop goes to Ed's Water Store to search for Jimmy. Ed tells him that after he left, the CAP Crew forced Ed to pay them protection money. RoboCop assures a report will be made and leaves.

Parks confronts the OCP Chairman about the CAP Crew. Parks' myriad of concerns fall on deaf ears when the OCP's Corporate Psychology Advisor, Dr. Newlove's conclusion that former criminals are the best candidates to become police officers, which the Chairman believes will ensure that the CAP Crew ends the Fun epidemic. Additionally, the executives praise the idea that employment of the CAP Crew saves them 12.25% on the OCP's law enforcement budget.

At the CAP Crew's headquarters, Delorio oversees the production of Fun and Danny Boy's research into Jimmy Murphy, learning that he is the son of the late Alex Murphy and that Danny Boy's insistence on protection money was reported to the police. Delorio commands him to threaten Ed into silence and recruit Jimmy.

Danny Boy and a few other members of the CAP Crew go to Ed's Water Store, significantly damaging the property and products. RoboCop arrives and threatens Danny Boy if he does not uphold his duty to uphold the law. Meanwhile, at the headquarters, Delorio convinces Jimmy to join the CAP Crew. Danny Boy reports the encounter with RoboCop to Delorio. Delorio tells Danny Boy to find a criminal to be made an example of.

Detective Madigan meets with Fun dealers, but one of them, Skinner, recognizes her as a police officer and restrains her. The other dealer, Freddy, threatens her with a grenade until RoboCop arrives and chases Freddy as Madigan overpowers and arrests Skinner. Upon entering Zone Five, Freddy tosses his grenade at RoboCop who catches it and – unable to throw it anywhere safely – lets it detonate in his hand, blowing one of his arms off.

Freddy escapes from RoboCop and gloats to Danny Boy, who decides that Freddy will be their example. The CAP Crew beats Freddy severely and he dies in the hospital of his injuries. Citizens interviewed on Mediabreak praise the CAP Crew.

Lippencott repairs RoboCop's arm and is forced by Foster to insert a chip into RoboCop that will disallow him to enter Zone Five, much to Parks' disapproval.

Madigan argues with Skinner's lawyer as she tries to question the suspect. She is unsuccessful, as she threatens Skinner with jail time, a violation of the Mendoza Rule. Having planted a tracker on Skinner, Madigan leaves to follow him back to his source of Fun. Concerned over Jimmy's involvement with the CAP Crew, Nancy Murphy comes to the precinct to get Madigan's help with Jimmy, but is too late.

As he approaches Zone Five, RoboCop's vehicle shuts down. He sees Jimmy within its boundaries and gets out of his car to speak to him. However, unable to enter the zone, the CAP Crew taunt RoboCop and throw objects at him.

Madigan follows Skinner to a Fun house, learning that the CAP Crew manufacture Fun.

Lippencott and RoboCop watch Umberto Ortega interview Delorio, Babs, and Jimmy on What's On Your Mind?. When asked if he would rather be a policeman or with the CAP Crew, Jimmy parrots Delorio's insistence that the police department is outdated and the CAP Crew is the future.

Madigan goes to the CAP Crew headquarters and enters the Fun lab. She records a video of its manufacture until she is caught by a CAP Crew member. Alerted to her presence, CAP Crew members chase Madigan, who escapes, though her video camera is dropped in a struggle. Danny Boy shows the recording to Delorio. Jimmy is caught peeking into the Fun lab and he runs from the building. He calls his mother, telling her of the CAP Crew's Fun peddling and begging her to leave Zone Five. Danny Boy catches him and disconnects the call.

Nancy comes to the precinct, telling Madigan, Parks, and RoboCop of the Fun trafficking operation. RoboCop sets out to find Jimmy, asking Parks to have the Chairman change his programming to allow him into Zone Five. Parks and Madigan tell the Chairman that the CAP Crew is responsible for Fun. The Chairman fires Dr. Newlove and removes RoboCop's restriction from entering Zone Five.

RoboCop watches the CAP Crew take Jimmy inside until the programming change takes effect. He marches inside and confronts the group. Police backup arrive outside to arrest the underlings as RoboCop enters the Fun lab. Jimmy frees himself from Delorio, who falls into a vat of Fun after RoboCop shoots a catwalk suspension. The rest of the catwalk begins to collapse and Jimmy falls, caught by RoboCop. Jimmy thanks him for the rescue and asks if he has a real name. Hesitating, the cyborg says to call him RoboCop.
